Taking Online Classes For Accreditation
Distance learning or the earning of a college degree by taking classes online grows in popularity with every passing year. There are currently over 200 accredited major colleges and universities that offer legitimate distance learning degrees through classes taken via the Internet.
With college tuition costs soaring thanks mainly to perverse incentive programs, many people are turning to online distance learning. It's not that online classes come with lower tuition costs than their on-site counterpart classes; usually the costs are very similar. However, Internet distance learning allows cost savings in other ways. Many people who choose online classes are already working full time and bringing in money, as they could not afford to go to college straight from high school or they already have a B.A. and now want to get an M.A. or Ph.D to further their career advancement. Indeed, a little more than 50% of online distance students are 30 or older and close to 20% are at least 40. So they offset the cost of their tuition and lessen their student loan burden by already having a steady source of income.
Taking classes via the Internet also saves on room and board costs, supply costs, and commute costs. It's also possible to use federal and state educational grant money, such as Pell Grants and many others, to finance an online education. Grant money is not a loan: it is awarded money for a specific purpose that never needs to be paid back. Grant money has to be applied for and there's competition. Whoever can make one of the most compelling cases why she deserves certain grant money will get it.
Grant money is not exclusive to online distance learning, of course, but if someone can get a grant for learning online while holding a full time job they will come out even further ahead.Mainly, however, distance learning via the Internet is done for purposes of overcoming obstacles of place and time. People who are engaged in distance learning via the Internet don't have to travel or relocate to a far away or unfamiliar place to get their higher education. Instead they can remain at home in familiar surroundings and among people they know while they pursue their dream of a higher degree. This can help them feel more relaxed and better able to focus on their studies instead of having social and travel worries.
Furthermore, when one is engaged in distance learning one is learning on one's own time. There are tests to be studied for of course, but the material is learned according to one's personal schedule. Another advantage of online distance learning is that there is no commute at all. As mentioned above this saves money, but more importantly to many it saves time and reduces possibly distracting stress. With distance learning, one keeps one's job and can continue to raise one's family. There will be some disruption at home felt at first as a new schedule is adjusted to in order to allow for the time needed for studying and homework assignments. However, this disruption is minor compared to that of having to commute or spend months away from the home on a distant campus. No-one needs to give up their personal responsibilities, quit their job, or disrupt a close relationship for the sake of learning.
