Higher Education Online

The Educational Times - They Are A'Changin' Too

Let’s face it, the times are changing.  Technology, especially regarding computers and internet, has become so advanced and it continues to do so.  These advances in technology have opened a whole new world for those of us that do not have the ability to continue our education in the traditional manner.  Because of busy schedules, work, children, or where we live some of us are unable to go to a traditional college or university campus to take courses to further our education.  With the introduction of online education many of us are able to now take courses in the comfort of our own homes while continuing to be available for our families.

Many of us are also now able to hold down a full time job, go home and put in a few hours of course work at our leisure.  Whether it is nine at night or three in the morning, you can access your courses twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.Advanced learning has become more affordable due to online courses.  Many online courses are less expensive than campus courses.  Add in the fact that you have no traveling expenses, no daycare expenses, and no parking expenses (to name just a few) the savings are enormous.

Another advantage of online education is that the time it takes to receive your degree is often less than traditional college or university degrees.  The courses can be taken year round, and you do not have to factor in for holiday breaks, spring break, or other traditional campus breaks.  Each term is about eleven to twelve weeks long with only a short break between courses.

Many employers are now readily accepting, and even encouraging, online education degrees.  They are recognizing the online education is an asset of potential employees.  Not only does an applicant with an online degree possess the skills required for a position, the potential for further education or skill advancement is far greater.  Employers are also recognizing that potential job candidates possess other skills that are outside of the actual education.  A candidate that is online educated usually has the ability to work independently with very little direction from an employer, among many other skills.

Is online education for everyone?  The answer is simply no.  Online courses requires that a person to be dedicated and organized.  One must be a self starter and be able to follow through with commitment.  Time management skills are a must.  You must be able to coordinate all of your daily activities so that you can accomplish all of your daily goals.
How much a person takes away from an online course is totally up to the individual.  Some courses are designed in such a way that a student can breeze through without really learning anything.  Other courses are set up in a way that really challenges a student to be really involved in their learning.  These are the courses that will offer students the most advantageous learning.

There are online resources that can aid you in the decision on whether or not online education is for you.  One such site is http://www.elearners.com/resources/self-assessments.asp.

Furthering your education is always a good idea.  Maybe online education is just what you were looking for to better your educational status or giving yourself a better financial edge.
